Amazon planning to offer paid apps for free via “Unlocked” program

With an aim to bolster its Appstore installs, Amazon is said to be launching a new

“Unlocked” program, as per Tech Crunch. This service will offer paid apps and games

absolutely free.

The report describes Unlocked as “Amazon Prime for apps,” and it would offer paid apps for

free, and even unlock all in-app purchases for “free-to-play” games. Developers can leave

Unlocked, and when they do, users will have to begin paying for in-app purchases again.

The document showed off a few examples of games and apps that may be offered through

the Unlocked program. Some of the apps and games in the Unlocked program are Sonic

Dash, and Monument Valley , OfficeSuite 8 + PDF Converter and Ultimate Guitar Tabs &

Chords.

It is not clear when Amazon Unlocked will launch, how it will work, where the free apps will

be located, and how much it will cost. Moving on the report further adds that Amazon plans

to promote Unlocked heavily in its main shopping app — and Unlocked users will in fact

need to have that main shopping app installed
