Google Chrome's Data Saver Feature Now Available for Desktop Users

Image
Google has launched a new Chrome browser extension called Data Saver, which can be used  to save bandwidth and time when loading Web pages. The service has till now been  primarily targeted at mobile users, since they suffer from limited connectivity and try to  save  expensive data. However, with the launch of this extension, Google has made the  service available to PC users of the Chrome browser as well. The Data Saver extension, currently in beta, can be downloaded from the  Chrome Web  Store . Google has been quiet about this launch, refraining from making any announcements  on the same. The extension was released on the Chrome Web Store on March 23. The extension will only work on Chrome 41 and above, and should turn on by default  immediately after installation. It can be disabled and re-enabled through settings. It should  also be pointed out that the extension does not function when used with secure (HTTPS)  sites and during Incognito mode. Google's

Gmail for Android gets “All Inboxes”, smart search and more

Image
Google has  updated  Gmail for Android with an important feature that will help users  organize their email accounts. The latest update adds “All Inboxes”, smart search and better  Drive integration. First up, Gmail is adding the ability for users to view emails from all your different accounts  in one spot with a new “All inboxes” option. This lets you respond to all of your emails  without needing to manually switch between accounts and it does not matter if its a Gmail  account as the feature works for non-Gmail accounts as well. Moving on, the latest update also adds Conversation View feature for email services beyond  Gmail like Yahoo, Outlook.com and other IMAP/POP accounts. All the emails will be  displayed in a “neatly stacked as one conversation.” The new Gmail for Android update will  even include improved auto-complete feature when searching for keywords, which will  allow  you to find the correct email even faster. Finally, users can now see larger prev

Microsoft adds Project Spartan browser in latest Windows 10 build

You may soon be able to run Android apps on Windows Phone

Image
Nearly five years following its debut, the beleaguered Windows Phone still suffers from a  lack of apps. Recent, high-profile additions like WatchESPN have mitigated things, but the  truth remains that the offerings on the Android and iOS app stores positively dwarf  Microsoft’s own. The App Store and Play Store respectively boast an app catalog north of 1  million, while the Windows Phone Store just last November reached 187,000. Microsoft is  acutely aware of this fact, and in response is reportedly experimenting with Android app  emulation within the upcoming Windows Phone 10. According to Neowin, the scope of the emulation is quite wide. As the software currently  stands, most Android apps are compatible, and some builds even sport a working Google  Play Store client. Of course, questions about the legality of the emulation’s implementation  and its potential effects on native Windows Phone development have kept the project from  being green-lit thus far. Tec

WhatsApp Voice Calling for iPhone Coming in 'Couple of Weeks': Co-Founder

Image
Brian Acton, Co-founder WhatsApp, at a recent event confirmed that the voice calling  feature will be rolled out to iOS users in "couple weeks". While speaking at Facebook's F8 developers' conference, Acton said that WhatsApp team  "refined and iterated voice calling" last year before launching it on Android. Unfortunately,  Acton did not reveal (via  Venture Beat ) an exact time-frame for the release of the voice  calling feature on iOS, and when pressed later disambiguated to say, "Well, several weeks." Acton's statement however is the first official confirmation of the start of the rollout of the  voice calling feature, which began with Android users earlier this month. Unfortunately,  WhatsApp voice calling feature is being rolled out in phases, which means it is currently  available to limited users and invites only work within specific time periods. Leaked screenshots claimed to be from a jailbroken iPhone ru

Truecaller for Android Can Now Look Up Numbers From Any App

Image
Truecaller for Android has received a new update that will enable users to identify any  mobile number on the smartphone without opening the app. Called Truecaller Auto-Search, the feature lets Android app users identify an unknown  number by just copying it - associated information will then be automatically searched for,  and a notification will be displayed to the user. The company claims that users can 'auto- search' for an unknown number seen on a website, mail or even message by just copying the  number. Essentially, the Truecaller app now checks whenever a number is copied onto the Android  smartphone's clipboard, from any app, such as Gmail, Messaging, or a Web browser. Announcing the new update, Truecaller said on its  blog , "Identifying a number has never  been so fast, and frictionless. Android users now can be browsing anywhere on their phone,  copy a phone number, and Truecaller will instantly try to identify the number and give easy

Apple is expected to launch three new iPhone models this year - the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S  Plus, and iPhone 6C - claims a report citing industry sources. While the  report  suggests that the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus will be the incremental  updates from last year's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, it adds the iPhone 6C will be cheaper  variant of the handset that the Cupertino-based giant will launch to tap the emerging  markets, which also includes India. All three are due in the second half of 2015. No reasoning was given as to why the 'S' in the model names will be upper-case. Digitimes  suggests that the new iPhone models will pack LTPS panels supplied by various companies  including Japan Display, Sharp and LG Display, and will also feature Corning Gorilla Glass  protection. The report adds that the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus will use the A9 chips  while the iPhone 6C will be backed by A8 chips. Other highlight features such as NFC and  fingerprint

Doctors Develop App That Calculates the Health of Your Heart

Image
A team of doctors here have developed a mobile application through which the health status  of heart could be monitored at any time of the day by calculating the risks and giving  recommendations on how to avert heart conditions in future. The mobile application, named ' Heart Health Meter ' (HHM App), was launched at a  function in Thane last evening by a team of doctors and IT experts from Madhavbaug - an  organisation of multidisciplinary cardiac care clinics and hospitals - on its 50th anniversary. Explaining the modalities of the app, Rohit Sane, trustee and MD of Vaidya Sane Trust (the  parent organisation of Madhavbaug), said through 'HHM App' one can know the current  health status of his heart. "With increasing age, conditions like diabetes, excess weight,  smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels damage our blood vessels and the  heart, increasing our risk of getting a heart attack," he said. The 'Heart He

WhatsApp likely to backup chat history with Google Drive integration

Image
WhatsApp is looking forward to  bringing  a simpler way for its more than 700 million users  to save their chat history. The popular mobile messaging app could bring Google Drive  integration to  restore  you conversations. Users chats gets wiped out when they uninstalls WhatsApp, change their devices or  performs factory reset. Currently, WhatsApp allows users to backup and restore their chats  but is it a long and complicated process as WhatsApp chat files have to be manually backed  up to a computer and then copied onto the new device to restore them. It is said that users  can also backup images along with chat history but not video files as they can be pretty large  in size. Hence, the addition of Google Drive will certainly be a welcome move for more that.   The possibility of a Google Drive integration was revealed in an email WhatsApp sent to a  member of their translation group, and according to the email, it asked the group member  to  translate certain

unmanned aircraft that can beam internet access down to people from the sky-Internet.org

Image
As part of our  Internet.org  effort to connect the world, we've designed unmanned aircraft that can beam internet access down to people from the sky. Today, I'm excited to share that we've successfully completed our first test flight of these aircraft in the UK. The final design will have a wingspan greater than a Boeing 737 but will weigh less than a car. It will be powered by solar panels on its wings and it will be able to stay at altitudes of more than 60,000 feet for mon ths at a time. Aircraft like these will help connect the whole world because they can affordably serve the 10% of the world's population that live in remote communities without existing internet infrastructure. We'll talk about this more in a keynote at F8 that starts at 10am Pacific. You can watch at  fbf8.com.   ‪#‎ f8‬
